AMERICAN SHAD BLUE BACK
American shad, the largest member of the herring family, is widely considered the tastiest of the world's 31 shad species; the species name (sapidissima) means "most delicious."
In the summer of 2021, Optimum Baits and Butch Brown released a purple back American Shad with Deps in the Slide Swimmer Series.
Butch indicates that the Purplish ones you see are more of a mature shad that’s been around a bit and they are typically larger in size.

Butch’s Point of View on the Colors
New for the spring of 2023, Butch releases the Blue Back version of the Slide Swimmer 250.
Going very scientific on us, Butch calls the Blue version “Alosa Sapidissima” for the baits scientific name. He definitely agrees that
this batch of baits look “most delicious” and can’t wait to see what everyone catches on them this year.
The shads you find that have more blueish coloring are “more the color of the younger shad you see in the spring and early summer,” says Butch.
